If you are planning a trip to Poland, food will certainly be one of your expenses. To reduce costs, instead of a hotel room, you can rent an apartment with a kitchen and cook for yourself. Then the price will certainly be lower than for hotel breakfasts or lunches and dinners in restaurants. Yet, are food prices in Poland really so low that it is worth giving up comfort for the sake of saving on food? Let's take a closer look! Let's assume that on average you pay at least 50 PLN (10 euros) for breakfast in a hotel in a big city for one person, around 100 PLN (20 euros) for lunch for one person (including drink and dessert), and around 25 euros for dinner in a nice restaurant. What are the prices of basic food products in shops in Poland? Let's consider the basic products you can make breakfast with. The cheapest loaf of bread costs about 5 PLN (1 EUR) in a shop, but in a good bakery it costs about 15-18 PLN (3-4 EUR)! Bread in Poland is very good, maybe even the best in the world, so it's worth buying the top-shelf one! Next, butter costs about 8 PLN for 200 grams. Ham or cheese costs about 6-7 PLN for 100 grams. You will pay about 15 PLN for a kilogram of tomatoes. For 10 eggs you will pay around 10 PLN. The cost of a self-made breakfast for one day for one person will be around 15 PLN (3 euros), and the price per person will certainly be lower for a larger number of people. What will be the price of the products needed to make dinner for one in Poland? Pasta will cost about 1 euro, a kilo of potatoes about 1 euro, and 400 grams of chicken fillet about 4-5 euros. A decent dinner in Poland for one person can therefore cost around 4-5 euros per person. Of course, you also need spices, oil and other essential products to be able to cook. Nevertheless, the price for self-cooked meals will certainly be much lower than in a restaurant, especially if you are travelling in a group. Of course, travelling is also about trying local food! So the question is whether you prioritise comfort or price? Although food prices in Poland have risen sharply in recent years, they are still relatively cheap. Shops such as Biedronka and the German discounters Lidl and Aldi, which are well-known in Europe, are practically everywhere and their prices are comparable. But you will also see Żabka shops on every corner, which have completely monopolised the small shop market. You can find almost everything there, but at prices that are about 20-30% higher than in other, larger shops.
In Poland, you will find dozens of very good restaurants in large cities such as Krakow, Warsaw and Gdansk. Most of them are located in the old town, but more and more restaurants are opening also in normal residential areas. The quality of life in Poland is improving rapidly. While a few years ago going out to a restaurant was a big deal, nowadays eating out once a week is quite normal. The cost depends on the quality of the restaurant, the location and the city. For example, in a large tourist city like Warsaw or Krakow, a price of 60 or 70 PLN (around 15 euros) for a main course no longer surprises anyone. Of course, you can also pay 35 euros for a main course, but in that case, we are talking about the best restaurants. In less sophisticated restaurants, you can get a main course for 7 or 8 euros. On average, the price for a full lunch/dinner including dessert and drink will be around 20 euros. Sometimes it is also worth looking for a promotion on the lunch of the day, that can cost around 7 or 8 euros for a two-course lunch with a drink. We also encourage you to visit "bar mleczny", a typical cheap restaurant with traditional Polish cuisine. We also encouage you to read our article about tradiotional Polish food and must-try dishes!
Accommodation, along with food, is the biggest part of travel expenses and there is no exception here; a hotel stay in Poland during high season is a big expense. The cost of a double room near the old town of Krakow, Warsaw or Gdansk is at least 500 PLN per night, which is about 100 euros. In the off-season, you can find a room of the same high standard for 20% or 30% less. That's why we always encourage you to travel around Poland in May, early June, late September or October, because that's when it's most beautiful, the weather is perfect for sightseeing and, of course, it's cheaper! You can find more information in our guide on when is the best time to come to Poland. Coming back to hotel prices, you can of course find a cheaper option for as little as 70 or 80 euros, but the standard and design of the room will be on a much lower level. An alternative to hotel rooms is renting an apartment on Airbnb. The price for a good standard apartment for 2 people will be similar, but you will have more space and a kitchen at your disposal. As for 4- and 5-star hotels, the price starts at around 150-200 euros per night for a double room. On average, you will pay around 800 euros for a one-week stay in a hotel in Poland for two people.
Many tourists come to Poland for a week and want to see the best attractions in and around Krakow during that time. What are the prices for a ticket to the Wieliczka Salt Mine, the Auschwitz Museum or attractions in Krakow itself? Let's start with Krakow. To enter the Wawel Castle (the most visited place in Krakow), the Cathedral or to visit any exhibition, you will need to buy tickets. A ticket for a tour of the entire Castle costs around 20 euros (89 PLN). You can also rent an audio guide for around 3 euros on site. Visiting the Wawel Cathedral will cost you about 5 euros. As for other attractions, a guided tour of the Wieliczka Salt Mine in English costs about 30 euros. A visit to a former concentration camp Museum KL Auschwitz costs around 25 euros. A trip down the Dunajec river on a traditional raft costs around 30 euros. The prices for attractions lasting about 3 hours are therefore very similar and oscillate around 25-30 euros for a normal ticket. Remember that practically all tickets can be bought online in advance. If you want to travel budget-friendly, look for information about free admission on websites. For example, you can enter the Auschwitz Museum for free at certain times. We wrote about it here. If you are planning to travel to Poland on your own, it is worth considering visiting cities with a guide. Of course, it is always possible to find a guide on site, but during the high season, most of the best guides are already booked and it can be difficult to find one. Therefore, we recommend booking a guide well in advance, especially in cities such as Krakow, Warsaw, Wroclaw, Poznan or Gdansk. The price for a 2-3 hour guided tour is around 100 euros, and for a full day it is around 200 euros. Another interesting and more budget-friendly way to explore cities is through a city game. You can check them out here. By solving various riddles, you will explore the city and learn a lot of interesting information about it.
